MARSEILLE, Nov 19 (SW) - Marseille scored on the hour mark and withstood enormous Valenciennes pressure to register a 1-0 Ligue 1 win at the Vélodrome on Sunday evening.
Valenciennes started the brighter of the two sides as they missed on an early free kick, but Sébastien Roudet came even close with a shot that flashed just wide in the 10th minute.
Marseille themselves came close to scoring just after the half-hour mark when Samir Nasri fired one on target, but Valenciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau repelled the shot to keep the match scoreless.
But the home side were fortunate to go the half-time break level when Roudet set up a shot for Patrick Paauwe in the 45th minute, but Marseille goalkeeper Cédric Carrasso was able to make the save and keep the match at 0-0.
That save was big for Marseille as they would take the lead on the hour mark when Mamadou Niang played the ball through to Mickaël Pagis who slotted past Penneteau for a 1-0 lead.
Valenciennes, though, were often the more likely side to score as Steve Savidan missed a chance to equalize just eight minutes later, and Paauwe likewise in the 78th minute as Valenciennes couldn't find an equalizer.
Visiting captain Laurent Dufresne then had a last-gasp chance to level the match in the dying minutes, but he saw his shot saved by Carrasso.
