Grygera linked with Italy move

AMSTERDAM, Nov 23 (SW) – Ajax stopper Zdenek Grygera is being closely linked with a move to Italy, with Juventus and Inter leading the race.

"Both these offers would be very tempting and it would be very difficult to choose the better one," explained the player’s agent. "It would depend on the final offer."

A highly influential figure for the Amsterdam giants, manager Henk ten Cate admits that the player’s time with the club is drawing to a close after he rejected the chance to sign a new long-term contract.

"It's clear that he wants a new challenge," said the former Barcelona assistant.

"It's a pity that he will be leaving, because he is a super professional and a great lad."

The Czech Republic international has been quoted in the past saying that he would like to one day play in Italy, and this stance hasn’t changed.

"There is no change in what I have already said - that I would like to play in Italy one day," said Grygera.

With Ajax not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League group stages, it opens up the possibility of a move as early as the winter transfer window in January

Written by: Chris Nixon
MILAN, Nov 23 (SW) – Brazilian fullback Cafu has admitted that he is considering his options ahead of the January transfer period.

After previously stating last week that he hoped to return home in January, the 36-year-old now says that he may be tempted to stay on even longer with the Rossoneri.

“There is a good chance that I might renew my agreement,” revealed the player.

“But I have also had some offers from other Italian and European clubs and one in Brazil, so I am thinking about the decision to make and talking with my family about it.

“I think I will decide on my future by January and it will be final.

“It would be nice if I could choose whether or not I want to continue my career instead of getting in a situation where nobody wants to sign me.”

Kiely moves towards exit

Portsmouth FC

Written by: Chris Nixon
PORTSMOUTH, Nov 23 (SW) – Veteran Portsmouth ‘keeper Dean Kiely admits he will probably be forced to leave Fratton Park in the search of regular first team football.

Whilst admitting he holds no grudges towards current incumbent David James, it is the way he has been treated which hurts Kiely the most after he helped guide the club to safety last season.

"We did a miraculous job (last season), played really, really well and got out of trouble and I find myself discarded as you will know," said the veteran.

"And that doesn't sit too well with me really because I've always played and done the business with the clubs I've been at!

"Well, you know it's probably looking that way (a January move) and this has really been forced upon me.

"After remaining in The Premiership and making a good contribution, my big picture was maybe move the family down and settle in the area.

"I have nothing against any other keeper. We come and we do our jobs. I just find it really, really difficult.

"Wherever I go I try to make a contribution. I don't want to sit here and pick up my wages for doing absolutely nothing.

"I'm concentrating on keeping myself fit and well. Physically and mentally I need to keep myself sharp because within a week things might change."

Caracciolo considers January move

Palermo
Palermo

Written by: Chris Nixon
PALERMO, Nov 23 (SW) – Palermo striker Andrea Caracciolo admits that he may be forced to move on from the club during the January transfer window.

The player has fallen down the pecking order since the summer arrival of Amauri from Chievo, and says that he needs to play to return to his best.

“My season so far has not been bad, although I have not scored, but you need to play to do that,” said the former Brescia player.

“It isn’t easy to accept the bench and if nothing changes I think Palermo will decide to send me elsewhere in January.

“I am disappointed that I didn’t play against Cagliari, but I cannot blame Coach [Francesco] Guidolin.

“His choices have been the right ones so far. As long as Amauri is playing so well there really isn’t anything I can say.

“I will do my best to convince Guidolin in the next month, but in January we will see.”

Caracciolo has been linked with moves to Roma and Liverpool in recent times.

LONDON, Nov 23 (SW) – Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is confident that Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack can overcome injury concerns for Sunday’s crunch showdown with Manchester United.

The pair were forced off early in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash against Werder Bremen, prompting doubts over their fitness for the all important top of the table Premierhsip showdown.

However, Chelsea boss Mourinho has sought to allay any fears by declaring both will make the trip to Old Trafford.

"Ballack's injury is nothing special. It is just pain,” explained Mourinho.

"The opposing player put his studs on his muscle and it is just painful.

"Didier is the same. He has a pain in the ankle but it is nothing serious. Normally, he will be fit enough for Sunday."

MILAN/MOSCOW, Nov 22 (SW) - Inter Milan secured a berth in the Round of 16 as they defeated Sporting in Champions League Group B, while Bayern Munich stay atop the group after a draw at Spartak Moscow.

Inter Milan - Sporting 1-0
Both sides had chances to go in front in the first half, but the Italians were the ones to open the score as Hernán Crespo, in the 36th minute, volleyed in a beautiful shot after an even better pass from Dejan Stankovic.

Alecsandro and Tonel both had efforts saved by Julio César in the second half as Sporting tried to keep alive their hopes of qualification, but Inter held on late to secure their spot in the next round.

Spartak Moscow - Bayern Munich 2-2
The struggling Russian side came out strong in this one and went in front in the 16th minute as Maxim Kalinichenko swung in a masterful free kick after being fouled by Willy Sagnol.

But Claudio Pizarro quickly pulled the goal back for the Germans - who have already qualified for the next round - as he headed into the Spartak goal just six minutes after the opener.

Pizarro then snatched the lead for Bayern six minutes before half-time with a laser drive that Alexei Zuev had no chance of stopping.

But the Russians came back in the second half and equalized in the 72nd minute when Radoslav Kovac turned the ball in after a scramble in the area following a corner kick.

Chelsea advance despite loss; Barcelona stay alive

BREMEN/SOFIA, Nov 22 (SW) - Chelsea moved on to the Champions League Round of 16 despite a loss away to Werder Bremen, while Barcelona kept alive their chances in Group A with a win at Levski.

Werder Bremen - Chelsea 1-0
John Obi Mikel missed an early chance when he headed over the top in the ninth minute, but Bremen quickly wasted one right back as Diego had a shot saved by Carlo Cudicini.

However, the Germans went in front in the 26th minute as Per Mertesacker snuck in behind the Chelsea defense to send a header past Cudicini.

The second half started in a bleak manner as Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was forced to limp off the pitch with an apparent ankle injury and his replacement Andriy Shevchenko nearly equalized on a free kick, only to see it saved by Tim Wiese.

Bremen held on up until the very end when Chelsea put an almighty scare into them, but a laser shot by Essien drifted just barely high of the target.

Levski - Barcelona 0-2
Barcelona, meanwhile, still have work to do to qualify after they defeated Bulgarian side Levski away in Sofia.

The striker-depleted side went in front on five minutes as Ludovic Giuly turned in a shot after the Levski defense failed to properly deal with a cross from the right by Gianluca Zambrotta.

Barcelona always looked comfortable despite desperately needing a win, and they eventually extended their advantage in the 65th minute when Andrés Iniesta scored on a rebound after Deco's shot was parried by Georgi Petkov.

Barcelona now must win at home against Werder Bremen on Matchday 6 in order to gain a berth in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Bremen need just a point in that match to move on.

Valencia beat Olympiakos, Roma lose at Shakhtar

Written by: Jonathan Roorda
VALENCIA/DONETSK, Nov 22 (SW) - Valencia beat Olympiakos 2-0 and are now certain of winning Group D, while AS Roma's near future is unsecure after a 1-0 defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk.

Valencia - Olympiakos 2-0
Valencia had secured qualification for the next round after four matches but a win would still be valuable in their quest for first place.

Olympiakos at the same time, needed a victory to have a chance to finish second in this group.

It was visible that Valencia were less motivated at Mestalla as their Greek guests were slightly more dominant in the first half.

Despite that balance however, it was Valencia to break the deadlock in the 45th minute. Miguel Angel Angulo combined with David Silva and Curro Torres, beat a defender and struck past goalkeeper Nikopolidis.

Just after the break, the Spaniards doubled the gap. Fernando Morientes scored his fifth Champions League goal of the season, heading past the keeper from a Silva cross.

Shakhtar Donetsk - AS Roma 1-0
Shakhtar, who began the day in fourth position, needed a good result against AS Roma to stay in the race for second place, while the Italians required a victory to secure their spot in the next round.

The Ukranians understood their task and immediately began to threaten Roma's goal and keeper Doni, but the Italians managed to limit the damage in the opening half.

This paid off in the second half. Just after the hour mark, the score was opened as Jadson Rodriguez found Ciprian Marica at the post, and the forward could easily head in for 1-0.

The situation in Group D is complicated ahead of the sixth and last matchday. While Valencia are save with 13 points, AS Roma still have to fear elimination.

The Italians have seven points and face Valencia in the last match. Shakhtar, who face Olympiakos, have five points and may still beat Roma for second place.

Liverpool win Group C, Bordeaux to UEFA Cup

Written by: Jonathan Roorda
LIVERPOOL/BORDEAUX, Nov 22 (SW) - Liverpool beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to secure their first place in Champions League Group C, while Bordeaux won the battle for third place with a 3-1 win over Galatasaray.

Liverpool - PSV Eindhoven 2-0
At Anfield Road, the two teams were already certain of a place in the second round but battled for the top spot in this group.

PSV started without their usual captain Phillip Cocu, who was struggling with a fever and replaced by the Hungarian Csaba Fehér.

Liverpool suffered two set-backs in the first half as both Xabi Alonso and Mark Gonzalez needed to come off injured and were replaced by Boudewijn Zenden and Luis Garcia respectively.

The hosts were dominant in the first 45 minutes and created several chances, although PSV keeper Gómes was seldomly threatened.

But the English hosts took the lead in the 65th minute. Captain Steven Gerrard received the ball from Dirk Kuyt and beat the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area.

The clash was decided just before the end of regular time, when a Luis Garcia cross was headed back by Dirk Kuyt and striker Peter Crouch stood in the right place to convert.

Thanks to this result, Liverpool secure the top spot as the difference with PSV now stands at three points, and the head-to-head record points out that the Dutch could never surpass Benitez' side.

Bordeaux - Galatasaray 3-1
As the top two spots in Group C were already divided, Bordeaux and Galatasaray had the UEFA Cup to focus on in the south west of France.

The match had been underway for 22 minutes when the homeside took the lead. Alejandro Cesar Alonso took advantage of bad clearance by Junichi Inamoto and scored his side's first goal in this Champions League campaign.

And two minutes into the second half, it was Lilian Laslandes to double Bordeaux' lead, scoring from a powerful Julien Faubert cross.

Faubert himself took care of his side's third goal, three minutes later. An inswinging cross was headed home for 3-0.

The situation affected Galatasaray midfielder Arda Turan, whose violent behaviour when dealing with Franck Juriette earned him a straight red card in the 59th minute.

Junichi Inamoto, whose error in the first half allowed Bordeaux to score, made up for his mistake when scoring back in the 73rd minute. The Japanese midfielder now managed to take advantage from bad defense by Pierre Ducasse and his powerful strike left Ramé without a chance.

No more goals were scored however and Bordeaux will be found back in the UEFA Cup after the winter break, while the European season is over for Galatasaray.

Written by: Jonathan Roorda
ATHENS/LENS, Nov 21 (SW) - AC Milan suffered a surprise defeat by AEK Athens but are certain of winning this group, while the Greeks move into second place. Lille dropped to third after a draw with Anderlecht.

AEK Athens - AC Milan 1-0
Milan were the dominant side in the first half but could not stop AEK from opening the score after 32 minutes.

Clarence Seedorf fouled Liberopoulos outside the penalty area and Julio Cesar's following free kick hit the net to put the Greeks in the lead.

Milan continued to pressurize the opposing defense but manager Lorenzo Serra Ferrer's side kept the Rossoneri away from Sorrentino's goal.

The Italians are certain of winning this group, due to their victory over AEK earlier this season and the result in the other match in this Group on Wednesday.

Lille OSC - RSC Anderlecht 2-2
In the opening phase at the Felix-Bollaert stadium of Lens, Lille were the stronger side and created more opportunities.

This paid off in the 28th minute. Nigerian Peter Odemwingie scored his first Champions League goal, firing past goalkeeper Schollen for 1-0.

But the Belgians did not give up and levelled ten minutes later. A through ball by Ahmed Hassan was found by Mbo Mpenza, whose strike went in off the far post.

The first few minutes of the second half had exactly the same result as the entire first half. Nicolas Fauvergue restored Lille's lead in the 47th minute, scoring in the rebound after having a shot blocked by Bart Goor.

But the French were given only one minute to celebrate as Mpenza soon scored his second goal of the match. This time, the forward found his way past a defender and beat keeper Sylva for 2-2.

Anderlecht had to survive the final phase of the match without Van Damme, who was handed his second yellow card in the 88th minute.

No more goals were scored however and Lille allowed AEK Athens to move into second place. The French may miss out on European football alltogether if they lose to Milan in the last match while Anderlecht beat AEK.

Celtic stun United, Benfica crush FCK

Written by: Stephen Sharp
GLASGOW/LISBON, Nov 21 (SW) - Celtic booked their spot in the Round of 16 and put themselves in position to win Group F in the Champions League after a stunning victory over Manchester United. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Miccoli lifted Benfica past FC København in the other game in the section.

Celtic - Manchester United 1-0
Manchester United looked the better side in a rather drab first half, their best chance coming when a Bobo Balde error allowed Cristiano Ronaldo through on goal, but his shot was turned away by Artur Boruc.

The half-time introductions of Shaun Maloney and Jiri Jarosik nearly had an immediate impact as Thomas Gravesen fired a shot from distance on goal after a poor Edwin van der Sar clearance, but the Dutchman recovered to make the stop.

Celtic picked up the pace although United looked dangerous particularly down the Ronaldo flank, but it was a controversial free kick that led to the dramatic goal.

Manuel Mejuto González whistled Nemanja Vidic for what he thought was a foul on Jarosik, and up stepped Shunsuke Nakamura who sent in a glorious curling effort from 30 yards out inside the near post, almost identical to his free kick strike on Matchday 1 against United, sending Parkhead into a frenzy.

But they nearly gave it away when Gravesen was whistled for a handball in the area on a free kick, but Louis Saha's penalty was saved by a diving Boruc to his right, giving Celtic a big win.

The Scots can now win the section with a victory in Denmark on Matchday 6. The standings, though, have no scenario where Celtic cannot go through to the next round.

Benfica - FC København 3-1
The Danish side, coming off of an historic victory over Manchester United on Matchday 4, were quickly brought to reality as defender Léo blasted a shot into the net, and Miccoli struck just two minutes later after Nuno Gomes' pass.

The always physical FCK tried to frustrated the Portuguese side with fouls and hard play, but it didn't bother the hosts as they went 3-0 up in the 37th minute when Miccoli grabbed his second of the game when Jesper Christiansen spilled a shot by Nuno Gomes.

Benfica, although they continued to dominate after the restart, failed to break through for any more goals and in fact conceded a late goal to Marcus Allbäck, although it was no more than a little consolation.

The Eagles now will travel to Old Trafford on Matchday 6 in a match they must win in order to advance to the next round.

Lyon draw with Madrid, Steaua hold Dynamo

Written by: Jonathan Roorda
MADRID/BUCHAREST, Nov 21 (SW) - UEFA Champions League Group E is fully decided as Olympique de Lyon held Real Madrid to a draw to secure the top spot while Steaua drew with Dynamo Kiev to earn a place in the UEFA Cup.

Real Madrid - Olympique de Lyon 2-2
Real Madrid showed confidence ahead of the match, and announced to want to avoid a second beating by Lyon this season.

But that confidence was soon gone as the French champions took the lead after ten minutes. Norwegian striker John Carew took advantage of bad defense by Italian Fabio Cannavaro and struck past Iker Casillas for 0-1.

And things got worse for the home side in the 31st minute. Frenchman Florent Malouda scored from a Juninho free kick to double the gap.

The Spaniards got one back eight minutes later however. A Ruud van Nistelrooy header was met by Mahamadou Diarra, who placed the ball behind his former side's goalkeeper to give his side new hope.

Lyon were heading for a victory as Madrid were struggling to find the net a second time, but Ruud van Nistelrooy finally levelled the score in the 83rd minute.

Raul hit the post but the Dutch striker stood in the right place to take advantage in the rebound.

A few minutes later, Van Nistelrooy was brought down by Cris in Lyon's penalty area, and had a perfect chance to guide his side to victory.

But goalkeeper Coupet was calm and saved the forward's effort to earn the visiting side a point and secure the top spot in Group E.

The French have a three-points advantage over Real Madrid and their head-to-head record with the Spaniards guarantees the first position after the sixth and last match.

Steaua Bucharest - Dynamo Kiev 1-1
At the start of the match, both Steaua and Dynamo knew that a place in the second round was impossible to reach.

However, there was still enough to play for as Steaua needed a draw to secure their spot in the UEFA Cup while Dynamo required a win to have a chance of playing European football after the winter break.

The visiting side opened the score close to the half hour mark, when a free kick from Florin Cernat was missed by the entire defense and disappeared behind goalkeeper Cernea.

But Steaua did what they were supposed to do and scored the equaliser in the 69th minute, when Nicolae Dica beat Ukraine international goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy from the edge of the penalty area.

Steaua now have four points and are certain of participating in the UEFA Cup. Dynamo have one point and their European adventure will be over after the last group match.

Written by: Stephen Sharp
LONDON/MOSCOW, Nov 21 (SW) - Arsenal and Porto are in prime position to qualify out of Champions League Group G after claiming victories over Hamburg and CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Arsenal - Hamburg 3-1
The English side were stunned early on as the Germans, eliminated already from the competition, struck in the fourth minute when Rafael van der Vaart hit a blistering shot.

But the Gunners were always the better team but lacked luck once again, the same luck that eluded them in Matchday 4 against CSKA Moscow.

But Robin van Persie broke Arsenal's bad run of luck in the 52nd minute as he tucked home from Cesc Fabregas' wonderful through-ball, and Emmanuel Eboué snatched the deserved winning goal seven minutes from the end with a finely finished shot.

Julio Baptista added a third goal in the 88th minute to ensure Arsenal finished the day atop Group G

CSKA Moscow - Porto 0-2
The Russians had a chance to secure their spot in the next round, but an early strike pegged them back as Ricardo Quaresma tucked home a cross by Lisandro López to stun the Lokomotiv Stadium crowd.

After a long trip from the eastern part of the nation over the weekend, CSKA came out flat and the 2004 European Champions from Portugal always looked the stronger side, squandering chances to extend their lead after the opening goal.

CSKA's inability to created scoring chances hurt them further in the 61st minute when Lisandro put a headed ball into the path of Lucho González who slammed past Igor Akinfeev to make it 2-0.

Porto now need just a point in their final match against Arsenal to clinch a berth in the Round of 16.

The 17 year old has been given permission by D.C united to travel to Manchester and Adu started training with the Red Devils academy players yesterday.

It is thought that if the Ghanaian born player can prove himself to Sir Alex Ferguson over the next fortnight then an official bid may be made for the youngest ever U.S International.

"We tried to get him here some years ago but he signed for DC United and that stopped the progress of us keeping tabs on him," said Ferguson.

"I think we would be interested, he's only young but we have known of him for a long time."

''We're not satisfied with the price nor the idea of handing over the player at the end of the year.''

GLASGOW, Nov 21 (SW) – Manchester United’s boss Sir Alex Ferguson said that he thought that the two giants of Scottish football, Rangers and Celtic would never get a chance of playing in the English Premier League.

Sir Alex said that there has been talk for a while now about them making the journey to England to compete and while he feels that they will do well, the difficulties involved would prevent it from happening in the foreseeable future.

The smaller English clubs would not favour such a move as it would threaten their survival in the top flight while the bigger clubs would fear a Scottish threat.

For the time being, he said, the only competition between the top English and Scottish clubs would have to be confined to European competitions.

Wenger accused the authorities of failing to move with the times and said that all that managers, players and spectators wanted was the correct decisions being made.
