LIVERPOOL/BORDEAUX, Nov 22 (SW) - Liverpool beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 to secure their first place in Champions League Group C, while Bordeaux won the battle for third place with a 3-1 win over Galatasaray.
Liverpool - PSV Eindhoven 2-0
At Anfield Road, the two teams were already certain of a place in the second round but battled for the top spot in this group.
PSV started without their usual captain Phillip Cocu, who was struggling with a fever and replaced by the Hungarian Csaba Fehér.
Liverpool suffered two set-backs in the first half as both Xabi Alonso and Mark Gonzalez needed to come off injured and were replaced by Boudewijn Zenden and Luis Garcia respectively.
The hosts were dominant in the first 45 minutes and created several chances, although PSV keeper Gómes was seldomly threatened.
But the English hosts took the lead in the 65th minute. Captain Steven Gerrard received the ball from Dirk Kuyt and beat the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area.
The clash was decided just before the end of regular time, when a Luis Garcia cross was headed back by Dirk Kuyt and striker Peter Crouch stood in the right place to convert.
Thanks to this result, Liverpool secure the top spot as the difference with PSV now stands at three points, and the head-to-head record points out that the Dutch could never surpass Benitez' side.
Bordeaux - Galatasaray 3-1
As the top two spots in Group C were already divided, Bordeaux and Galatasaray had the UEFA Cup to focus on in the south west of France.
The match had been underway for 22 minutes when the homeside took the lead. Alejandro Cesar Alonso took advantage of bad clearance by Junichi Inamoto and scored his side's first goal in this Champions League campaign.
And two minutes into the second half, it was Lilian Laslandes to double Bordeaux' lead, scoring from a powerful Julien Faubert cross.
Faubert himself took care of his side's third goal, three minutes later. An inswinging cross was headed home for 3-0.
The situation affected Galatasaray midfielder Arda Turan, whose violent behaviour when dealing with Franck Juriette earned him a straight red card in the 59th minute.
Junichi Inamoto, whose error in the first half allowed Bordeaux to score, made up for his mistake when scoring back in the 73rd minute. The Japanese midfielder now managed to take advantage from bad defense by Pierre Ducasse and his powerful strike left Ramé without a chance.
No more goals were scored however and Bordeaux will be found back in the UEFA Cup after the winter break, while the European season is over for Galatasaray.
